He began his career as a mechanical engineer at London Underground over 20 years ago, later working for a UK train owner as diesel fleet engineer, and then project engineer in Sydney, Australia.

Charles completed an MSc at UCL with his thesis considering the feasibility of fuel cells and batteries retrofitted to mid-life diesel trains. He has since worked with operators and suppliers to consider the risks and opportunities for traction energy decarbonisation in the rail sector.

Charles has managed major fleet engineering change projects for train operators and rail vehicle owners. Holding a key role in a UK government led train procurement, he supported system migration planning and benefits realisation for a significant rail investment programme. He has prepared asset management plans for private sector train operators, and delivered successful rolling stock bids for train manufacturers – all considering the impact of rolling stock design on whole life costs and benefits.

Charles enjoys woodland management, hiking, and spending time with friends and family.
